Favorite Sub Plans and Ready-to-Use Resources

Need go-to sub plans for the literacy teacher?

These are my favorite.

1. My Teaching Has Gone Missing Creative Writing Assignment with Plot Diagram Graphic Organizer

  1. Directions: YOUR TEACHER HAS GONE MISSING! Write a creative story that uses your imagination as to where you think your teacher may have gone. Also, add details to your story that predict where they went, what they may be doing, who they are with, why they went, and what will happen when they come back.

2. Have you tried using EdPuzzle for sub plans? You can leave videos that students can watch on their chromebooks. There are tons of pre-made lessons, and you can make an EdPuzzle lesson with any Youtube video. The cool part is that there are questions throughout the videos, and then grading is easy when everything is all done. You can push these easily to Google Classroom if needed.
Some potential review topics:

  • Plot diagram or plot elements

  • Summary writing/SWBST

  • TED Talk pertaining to a particular subject

  • Novel review

3. Check out CommonLit-This is a great resource for sub plans and supplemental readings in class! It is a whole library of resources-mainly fiction-that can work with curriculum materials. Two of may favorite stories are “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto and “Thank You M'am” by Langston Hughes

4. Leave a TED Talk for students to watch, analyze, and discuss. These can easily link to course content, and they can provide some inspirational information to students while you are gone. If you want them to watch it individually, you can find the TED Talk on EdPuzzle and assign through Google Classroom. If you want them to view it as a whole class, feel free to use the graphic organizer attached as a lesson resource. Need some video suggestions?
